Liverpool are sitting pretty at the summit of the standings in both the Premier League and the Europa League.

They are already guaranteed to finish top of Group E in the latter competition, having amassed four more points than Toulouse in second spot.

That means Liverpool will go straight through to the round of 16, thus helpfully avoiding an extra tie against a Champions League drop-out in the knockout round play-offs.

It also ensures the pressure is off on matchday six as Jurgen Klopp prepares to take his team to Belgium.

In the run-up to Thursday’s game against Union Saint-Gilloise, the Liverpool manager will no doubt already have an eye on this weekend’s crunch clash with Manchester United.

The Reds will go into gameweek 16 of the Premier League season as the new table-toppers after a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace last time out. It is the first time Liverpool have occupied first place in England’s top flight since September 2021.

They certainly did not have everything their own way at Selhurst Park. Palace took the lead through a Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty and Liverpool only got back into the match after Jordan Ayew was shown a contentious red card.

Mohamed Salah equalised almost immediately after the Ghana international’s dismissal, before Harvey Elliott won the game for Liverpool in stoppage time.

There is still room for improvement as far as the Reds’ performances are concerned, especially away from home. But as the midway point of the season approaches, Liverpool are in a healthy position.

Unlike the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, Klopp’s side are still in four competitions. They will now be looking to conclude the Europa League group phase with another win on Thursday.

Liverpool may name a second-string side here but they could still pick up a result against Union Saint-Gilloise.

Liverpool will almost certainly shuffle their pack when they visit the Stade Joseph Marien on Thursday.

For instance, it is hard to see the likes of Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold featuring from the first whistle with a game against Manchester United looming on the horizon.

Liverpool’s team will be weakened, but it will definitely not be weak. None of Cody Gakpo, Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones, Joe Gomez or Elliott started against Crystal Palace, for instance.

Meanwhile Alexis Mac Allister could be fit again after a knee problem, although he is unlikely to be risked in what is in effect a meaningless match.

Union Saint-Gilloise can still progress to the knockout round play-offs by finishing second in the group. 

It is a long shot, though: Union must beat Liverpool and hope that Toulouse lose to last-placed LASK. They also need a goal difference swing of three.

Union have stronger motivation than Liverpool, but the latter boast superior quality even with a second-string side. That is likely to determine the outcome of this encounter.

Liverpool ultimately collected all three points from their trip to Selhurst Park, but there were elements of their performance that will have concerned Klopp.

No team in the Premier League has collected more points away from home than the Reds, but their all-round displays have often left a lot to be desired.

Liverpool have a habit of starting slowly on the road: they have conceded the first goal in seven of their nine league matches at opposition grounds.

When they finally get going, Liverpool are reliant on individual moments of brilliance from their star players. They struggle to sustain attacks in the way they do so successfully at Anfield.

That should give Union Saint-Gilloise some encouragement. They will also draw heart from the fact that Liverpool have kept a clean sheet in just one of their 12 away games in 2023/24.

Union should be able to find the net here, especially as Liverpool’s backline will not be at full strength. Keeping Liverpool’s attacking players quiet at the other end will be less straightforward.

Had Dennis Eckert been available for the entirety of the Europa League group phase, Alexander Blessin’s side may well be in a stronger position right now.

Eckert has scored eight goals in all competitions this season. That includes two in Europe, although both of those efforts were in the qualifying rounds.

Eckert has only been fit enough to start one match in the group phase, but he should be involved when Liverpool come to town this week.

The German frontman is worth keeping an eye on as he attempts to help Union register a famous victory.
