Teen couple Jaxson Montague and Ashanti Smith die in Christmas car crash
Tributes are flowing for a “kind-hearted” couple who died in a horror car crash in South Australia just days after Christmas.
Learner driver Jaxson Montague, 19, and his girlfriend Ashanti Smith, 17, have been remembered as a “kind-hearted” couple who were deeply in love.
The young couple were driving, with Jaxson’s dad, 46, when the tragedy took place at Lochiel in the state’s mid-north.
The car is believed to have left the Augusta Hwy just before 7.30pm on Tuesday.
Both teenagers died at the scene, while Jaxson’s dad was flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
On Wednesday, Cassandra Seal, a friend of Jaxson, set up a Go Fund Me page, with a set goal of $10,000 to help the family cover costs during their “hard” time.
“I thought it would be a lovely idea to create a Go Fund Me for Jaxson and Ashanti,” Ms Seal wrote.
“They didn’t deserve what happened to them; so many people have broken hearts because of losing them.
“Times are hard and having to pay for their own child’s funeral would be devastating.”
Within a day, the page received over 200 donations, raising $8,239 of the $10k goal.
“I can’t believe in just a few short hours we have raised so much money; it’s honestly incredible,” Ms Seal wrote in a comment on the page.
“I can’t thank all of you enough for what you have done!”
Ashanti’s devastated grandmother Elizabeth Smith took to social media to express her family’s loss.
“Our beautiful granddaughter, our hearts are broken,” she said.
“You will be forever young. I wish you would just walk through the door or call, but it will never be like that again.
“Ashanti, what I would give just to hug you one more time. You will be forever in our hearts and you will be forever with your one true love, Jaxson.”
Similarly, Jaxson’s older brother, Logan Christoff, said he is still coming to terms with the tragedy.
“I’m still here waiting for you to answer the phone,” he wrote.
“Jaxson, you were hands down one of the liveliest and kind-hearted blokes anyone could have known and I am honoured to have been able to call you a mate.”
South Australia’s Major Crash investigators are trying to work out what took place in the lead-up to the incident.
