Stunts or Singles - Where Is the Focus of One Direction's Team?
In late November Liam Payne announced to fans that Infinity would be their final single before their upcoming hiatus. Fans received the news with mixed emotions being that Infinity was an early release before the album even came out – so fans had already grown used to it – and because there was one song on the album that fans felt was better suited to be their single before the hiatus.
All of the rumors, all of the fights
But we always find a way to make it out alive
Thought we were going strong
Thought we were holding on
Aren’t we?
You and me got a whole lot of history
We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen
You and me got a whole lot of history
So don’t let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever
Mini bars, expensive cars, hotel rooms, and new tattoos
And the good champagne, and private planes, but they don’t mean anything
‘Cause the truth is out, I realize that without you here life is just a lie
This is not the end
This is not the end
We can make it, you know it, you know
The more fitting track for a temporary goodbye was History and with lyrics like that it’s not hard to see why. One Direction fans went on a sort of campaign to change the single, not because they were unhappy but because History was said to be a sort of love song to the fans from Harry, Louis, Liam, and Niall. What better way to feel connected – like a team – than with a single like that? It just makes sense. It seems that the lads thought so too because it was announced on December 14th that the single would be changed to History.
However we’ve tiptoed into 2016, into the hiatus of One Direction, and there’s still not a new single at all – however fans did get a clip of Liam, Niall, Harry, and Louis filming a video for Infinity released on social media today.

This has fans asking if the lads finished the Infinity video and made one for History as well, and if so, will both be released?
While it’s hard to say what happens next, fans would not turn down a music video for both Infinity and History, but that would require the One Direction team to focus on the music and they’ve always seemed to struggle a bit when it comes to that.
In the time leading up to the hiatus there were two perfect windows of opportunity to release their latest single, and even a video to accompany it, that would have exposed either track to fans outside their targeted demographic. The X-Factor Finale would have been a perfect place to release Infinity (as it was still the soon-to-be single at the time) as fans all over the globe tuned in to see who would win the competition along with the promise of One Direction’s tearful ‘see you later’ from Simon Cowell.
The other amazing opportunity would have been during Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve where the lads had a pre-recorded performance and could have also described the intensity of History, its meaning to themselves and the fans alike, and been able to show the world a very meaningful music video to accompany the track.
Both of these opportunities were wasted however as it seems One Direction’s team was too preoccupied working on other ways to exploit the lads instead of giving fans what they truly want, and have wanted, for years – the music.
What fans got instead were highly photographed trips of both Louis and Harry linking them to *shocked gasp* pretty young women.
Maybe when the ‘winter girlfriend’ stunts are over, their team will remember that they’ve got another single to put out – first day of spring anybody? We wouldn’t be disappointed with a “Middle of January – see ya later!!” this year instead.
