A$AP Rocky’s  Long.Live.A$AP was one of the best debut releases this year and the Harlem rapper is still promoting the project.  A$AP released a dramatic themed video for his song “Phoenix” as he tells his story. According to rap-up.com:

“A$AP Rocky pulls the trigger on the cinematic video for “Phoenix,” the latest release off his debut Long.Live.A$AP. Lord Flacko conveys a dark love story in the Francesco Carrozzini-directed clip starring The Wire’s Michael K. Williams and supermodel Joan Smalls.

After a late night out, the couple comes home and an argument ensues. In a fit of rage, Smalls tears up the house and pulls out a gun.”

“This is one of the more serious songs on my album, so people are really expecting something cinematic from this video,” A$AP Rocky  told MTV News. “They don’t expect the average…me with my gold teeth and swag, it’s just really about a life message.”

In  another interview with MTV News,  A$AP  touched on the serious nature of the song.  He added,

“Before A$AP’s album dropped in January, he addressed the painful lyrics on “Phoenix” explaining his references to fallen icons like Michael Jackson and Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain (‘Bloody ink on my pad spelled suicide/Michael Jackson even passed ’cause you scrutinized’).

‘Those are natural feelings that we all get sometimes. You hurt so bad and you’re going through so much pain to the point where sometimes you don’t even wanna live anymore.’  That’s how a lot of people think, whether we’d like to admit it or not and that’s all I was showcasing. It was that emotion…suicidal kinda emotions.'”
