How much of these everyday foods can you consume before they kill you?
We all know that excessive consumption of certain foods is never a good thing. Too much sugar can make you hyper, not to mention overweight.
Binge on coffee and you're unlikely to sleep at night. More bread than you can handle will leave you bloated.
But have you ever wondered how much of something is enough to actually kill you?
A video has recently surfaced online explaining in detail the quantities needed for various foods to see us meet our maker. And while most are pretty unachievable, there are some pretty surprising findings.
Based on extensive research, the video by AsapSCIENCE demonstrates how as little as two spoonfuls of nutmeg could wipe us out. Frightening!
The video is the second installment in a series. The first, released in 2015 and seen by almost 13m people to date, revealed how a seemingly mundane cherry pit could be lethal, if bitten into. Chocolate was also shown to be deadly, though in the very short term that's only if you eat 85 full-sized bars.
Here are seven everyday foods that are deadly in large (and sometimes not so large) quantities.
Sugar
Ok, we all know sugar is dangerous. It can contribute to obesity, diabetes and heart disease among other conditions. Taxes have even been proposed to combat the nasty stuff.
But sugar can be lethal in the immediate term too. Ten and a half cups of sugar at once is enough to end the life of an 11 stone (70kg) person.
Oranges
Oranges are delicious and good for you, full of health benefits such as regulating blood pressure, helping prevent kidney disease and lowering cholesterol.
It is possible to overdose on vitamin C, however. Granted, it would take 11,000 oranges to reach that point, around the equivalent of 809 vitamin supplements. You would probably succumb to all the liquid before overdosing on the vitamins, as six litres of water consumed in one go is enough to get you.
Nutmeg
A surprising addition considering it only takes a few teaspoons to potentially kill you. More likely outcomes include convulsions, palpitations or nausea.
In 2007 the International Programme on Chemical Safety produced a report which stated that as little as five grams of the spice could be considered toxic.
Nutmeg was supposedly used as far back as the 12th century for its hallucinatory properties. Best be careful next time you mix some into your mash – and definitely don't try the cinnamon challenge with it.
Cherries
They are almost as synonymous with summer as strawberries and they are just as sweet. But cherries have a sinister side, and it lies within.
Swallowing a cherry pit is unlikely to be a pleasant experience, but don't bite into it before you do, as the outcome could be a whole lot worse.
One ground pit contains enough cyanide to stop your cells from using oxygen, which can kill you. Cyanide is also present in apple seeds and apricot kernels, but luckily in lower quantities.
Chocolate
Rest assured, your comforting binge on chocolate won't immediately kill you, though it might leave you feeling a bit sick.
But 85 full-sized chocolate bars contain enough theobromine to end a life. Dogs, however, are less efficient at processing the chemical, so it's true you shouldn't give them any chocolate.
Potatoes
We all know to stay away from raw potatoes. As members of the nightshade family, they potatoes produce solanine and chaconine, alkaloids that can be harmful to humans.
Green potatoes produce even more solanine, and it doesn't take that many to cause death. Around 25 would be enough, so stay away from green potatoes, even if cooked.
Bananas
Bananas contain plenty of potassium, which is great in small doses. Too much, however, can see the end of us. Eating around 480 bananas would be similar to a lethal injection, which contains potassium chloride.
Of course, your stomach would probably explode beforehand.
