G. D. Naidu was an Indian scientist, inventor, engineer, businessperson, photographer, and philanthropist who is credited with the manufacture of the first electric motor in India. Referred to as the “Edison of India”, “the wealth creator of Coimbatore”, and the “Miracle Man”, he developed India’s first indigenous motor in 1937 along with D. Balasundaram Naidu.

During his school years, he used to frequently get in trouble.
G. D. Naidu initially worked as a server in a hotel in Coimbatore with the intention of saving money to buy a motorcycle.
After he achieved his goal of buying a motorcycle, he spent his time dismantling and reassembling it and eventually became a mechanic.
In 1920, he began his transport business.
G. D. Naidu’s talents were not limited only to machinery and he went on to research and identify new varieties of cotton, maize, and papaya. Also, his farm was visited by noted figures like Sir C. V. Raman and Sir M. Visvesvaraya.
His other feat included building a house, from laying the foundation to completion, in just 11 hours from 6 am to 5 pm.
G. D. Naidu personally filmed the funeral of King George V in London in 1935. His camera also captured the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and Subhas Chandra Bose.
He contested in the 1936 provincial general elections but lost.
One of the gifts G. D. Naidu received included a Rolls-Royce car and he was the only one who had this luxury car in those times.
During the 1950s and 1960s, he provided jobs to numerous individuals in the engineering and manufacturing sectors.
The G D Naidu Industrial Exhibition was established in 1967.
Sir C V Raman once said of Naidu: “A great educator, an entrepreneur in many fields of engineering and industry, a warm-hearted man filled with love for his fellows and a desire to help them in their troubles, Mr Naidu is truly a man in a million – perhaps this is an understatement!”
A documentary film titled GD Naidu – The Edison of India was directed by K. Ranjit Kumar and produced by the Films Division of India. It covered his life, times, and contributions and won the “Best Science & Technology Film Award” at the 66th National Film Awards.
There has been a permanent Industrial Exhibition in his memory in Coimbatore.
In memory and honor of the celebrated inventor, G. D. Matriculation Higher Secondary School and G. D. Public School in Coimbatore have been named after him.
