EXCLUSIVE: John K Chats About New Single "Happiness"
Following the success of his singles “if we never met” and “6 months,” John K returns with new music at the perfect time. His brand new single, “Happiness,” dropped today, leaving fans more eager than ever to hear his debut project expected later this year. The RIAA-certified platinum pop-singer continues to capture the attention of listeners around the world with his passionately vulnerable lyrics and relaxing vibe. And this new unexpected anthem shows off his dynamic vocals and powerful songwriting in a completely different capacity. In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, John K opens up about new music, dream collaborations and more.
What can you tell us about your brand new single “Happiness” and the inspiration behind it?
“Happiness” was actually an idea we started a couple years ago that we really loved, but it just didn’t seem to align with the direction the project was going at the time. When COVID hit and quarantine started, we immediately realized how relatable of a concept it was. Talking to happiness like it’s a friend you haven’t seen in a while is something I think a lot of us are feeling right now. The idea behind releasing it was really to normalize that it’s OK not to be OK.
Can fans expect to see a music video or some sort of visuals for that track?
Yes! We have a lyric video on the way as well as a pretty dope visualizer. Maybe even an acoustic performance video too.
How does this particular single differ from “if we never met” and “6 months” either sonically or lyrically?
This song really couldn’t be more different from IWNM and 6 months. Sonically, it’s brighter and more upbeat. Lyrically, it’s definitely not a love song, and really has nothing to do with being in a relationship with someone else. It’s more about the relationship with yourself and what goes on in our own heads…and how happiness is more internal than we might sometimes realize.
Speaking of “if we never met,” that track completely took over the charts and streaming platforms! What was your reaction to the positive feedback and praise it received from fans around the world?
The success of this song is beyond my wildest dreams of what I thought it would be. I’m blown away everyday by the way people connect to IWNM. It’s humbling more than anything else and I’m just so grateful because this is such a special song to me.
There’s more music on the way! What can you tease about your upcoming debut project fans can expect to receive later this fall?
I love writing love songs, but my fans can expect more tempo than they’ve heard from me in the past. Words like “classic” and “timeless” are goals we strive for [through this project]. The release will be pop-forward with a little throwback vibe to it.
Is there anyone you would love to collaborate with in the future?
My collab wish list is so long. But to name a few I’d have to say Jon Bellion, Max Martin, John Ryan, Alessia Cara, Sasha Sloan and Lennon Stella.
What artists or bands have recently caught your attention and inspired you?
I love what Niall Horan is doing right now. His new song with Ashe “Moral of the Story” is dope. Also, [I] really dig Jaden Smith, Remi Wolf and Dominic Fike.
Lastly, if you could only listen to one album for the next month, which one would you choose and why?
If I had to pick right now, I’d go with Big Sean’s new album. It’s been on repeat since he dropped it last week!
